It is beyond awesome and humbling how the Bible demonstrates engagement in real love: “This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” 1 John 4:10 NLT
Courting GOD’s way has taught us so much about being engaged in real love. Since the start of our courtship (03/24/15), we decided we would actively pursue Christ…we would intentionally pursue marriage by courting GOD’s way, and what a beautiful learning process this has been. We decided that we wanted to be obedient and eliminate ALL distractions: no kissing, no intimate touching, no living together….our focus has been on communicating and growing together spiritually so that we could understand GOD’s purpose for our lives, and so that we could fully engage in His love. Almost 1 year later, on 3/20/2016 we were engaged to be married, and we are so thankful that we sacrificed our fleshly desires so that we could become closer to Christ. What an amazing foundation for the future. We are excited to unite in Holy Matrimony and share our first kiss on December 3rd, 2016 in Atlanta, GA surrounded by the grace and mercy of Christ, as well as our dear family and friends.
Engagement in real love specifically represents a covenant of: sacrifice, mercy, and obedience. Christ is such a perfect example of engagement in real love. Because of His example, we can now emulate for the glorification of GOD.
What a blessing to be engaged in real love BY actively living for GOD who really loves us all so much that He sent His Son as a sacrifice to cleanse us from sin. This real love/cleansing of sin fosters a renewed mind and pure heart which is foundational in our walk with Christ. Our walk with the LORD should intentionally mimic that of Jesus Christ…we should pursue His righteous ways in all situations. This means that all of who we are should resemble Christ, this includes- our relationships, our friendships, our careers, our hobbies, etc. During our journey, our mind should continuously be renewed. His desires should become our desires. Will we fall short of His glory? Of course, we are human, and the Bible explains the limits of human wisdom in the 7th chapter of Ecclesiastes- “Not a single person on earth is always good and never sins.” Ecclesiastes 7:20 NLT.
Essentially, we must recognize that the victory is in *l e a r n i n g* and *g r o w i n g* from mistakes. Yes, GOD truly appreciates the actions done in faith as small as a mustard seed, however the idea is that our faith and spirit will continuously mature with each experience. As our minds mature, our actions will subsequently begin to mimic that of Christ. We should not knowingly sin and continue repenting for the same sins- such a cycle does not represent growth, it represents immaturity and lack of learning. We should instead recognize our sins and then actively resist from them through the strength that GOD provides. “So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God.” Hebrews 6:1 NLT
Being engaged in real love is a covenant to: pursue Christ, mimic Christ, and serve Christ. In actively pursuing Christ, we demonstrate our understanding and knowledge of real love through obedience because we know that Christ is very blunt and specific in His requirements for real love: “If you love me, obey my commandments.”
John 14:15 NLT
So, we M U S T recognize that being engaged should represent love and all that love demands as detailed in the Bible. As previously mentioned in John 14:15, love means to obey His commandments- no excuses. this means that if we have a desire to do something that is directly disobedient to His word, we must deny our flesh, or sacrifice our wants for His needs.
An engagement in real love should represent obedience; an engagement in real love should represent sacrifice; an engagement in real love should represent mercy. For example- obedience to His word in how we treat our soulmates (i.e. reverentially respectful), sacrificing our desires to be obedient to Him (i.e. not fornicating, though the flesh may want to do so), mercy (i.e. unconditional love to one another as Christ unconditionally loves us).
“Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.” Romans 12:10 NLT
“The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease.”
Lamentations 3:22 NLT
Let us all on earth continue to pursue Christ, we do not know the day nor the hour when He shall return so let all of our actions represent him.
